New Blow to Quakers' Survival Bid

DARLINGTON''S survival hopes have suffered a blow after a major potential investor pulled out during advanced takeover talks.

A small, previously unknown consortium backed by a wealthy individual was yesterday understood to be in talks with administrator Harvey Madden, when complications arose and talks broke down.

As the bid has stalled, the Gazette has agreed to a request not to publish names.

But the decision is a blow to the prospects of a survival package being put on the table before the money runs out.

A member of the consortium said: "We had quietly worked on this for some time. We are more than disappointed."

Mr Madden was today understood to have switched his search for a saviour elsewhere, though he is also waiting to see what develops with two other possible rescue packages.

The development company looking at building houses and a snowdome along with other leisure facilities, is still in the background, while the Supporters Trust is still pushing ahead with their plans. …
