THIS Tuesday Toronto outfit Kobo Town bring a rootsy mix of calypso, mento, reggae and funk to warm up the Old Town Hall in Gateshead.

While the temperatures in Toronto are not much different to here, the Caribbean vibe they bring should make the place feel tropical.

Kobo Town has existed as a band for about eight years during which time they have toured relentlessly. They are due to release a new album now. The name is a reference to a district in Port of Spain, capital of Trinidad, from whence much of their musical influence is drawn.

Strings, percussion and brass and warm, rich vocals may help the audience to forget the cold.

WEDNESDAY night brings the Mississippi-born Lisa Mills and bassist, Ian Jennings to the Cluny 2. Mills' latest album, Tempered In Fire, has generated vocal comparisons to Lucinda Williams.

The album was recorded in Kent and she has toured the UK in support of the record which contains help from Ian Jennings (Big Town Playboys) and Andy Fairweather Low. …
