A COUPLE have been banned from keeping animals after they kept a monkey in their home and "loved it like a child".

Patricia Wilson and Duncan Johnson kept the marmoset, called Marley, in their house.

But following a tip-off, RSPCA officers visited the flat and confiscated the animal.

Wilson - who said she loved the monkey and used to get it out of its cage to play with - and Johnson claimed they bought it for pounds 900 from someone in Elswick in Newcastle's West End.

They had seen the monkey advertised on Facebook.

Magistrates in Gateshead heard how the couple's home was filled with overflowing ashtrays, the animal's cage was too small and a dog was roaming around the badly littered house.

Johnson, 27, and 29-year-old Wilson, of Rawling Road, Low Fell, Gateshead, both pleaded guilty to charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

They have been disqualified from keeping any animals, except dogs, for three years and were ordered to pay pounds 100 in costs. …
