DARLINGTON were today preparing for a double bid to escape from their current woes.

The bid to emerge from administration is gathering momentum, while the team faces a battle to beat relegation to the second tier of non-league football following last night's 2-0 defeat at Southport.

Unless Craig Liddle's side find their goal touch, they will become the first recently-relegated Football League side to drop out of the Blue Square Premier League.

To be fair to Liddle and his players there are major mitigating circumstances.

They are having to field a young, inexperienced side as several senior players have left the club since the financial troubles descended.

And a transfer embargo has restricted Liddle's options, though he has been allowed to sign some players, under emergency rules, in the interests of fair competition.

New signings Clark Keltie and Liam Bagnell played last night, and although they helped Darlington have the lion's share of possession, they couldn't prevent the team slipping to defeat. …
