Massive bets on Newcastle

PUNTERS clearly believe coach Wayne Bennett will make an immediate impact with the Newcastle Knights getting backed to win everything but the Leagues' club chook raffle.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said the Knights had been the best-backed side to win the Premiership, the minor premiership, make the Top 8 as well as provide the leading try scorer and point scorer.

C[pounds sterling]We have taken a bet of $30,000 at $1.60 the Knights to make the eight, a bet of $5000 at $ 9.00 for the minor premiership and strong premiership money at $10,C[yen] Sullivan said.

C[pounds sterling]Akuila Uate is also the raging favourite to be top try scorer with a bet of $3200 at $8.00 arriving for him while Kurt Gidley has been backed from $17 to $15 to be leading point scorer.C[yen]

C[pounds sterling]Wayne Bennett may be the best coach in the land but punters are expecting an awful lot from him and a team that fell into the eight last year.

Sullivan said the Broncos had been well supported by punters shortening from $13 to $11 but the Gold Coast had been friendless with punters at $26 despite some big signings.

Hawks flying high for double

HAWTHORN has clearly been the best-backed side to win the AFL Flag this year and punters have also launched a plunge on them to win the NAB Cup.

Sullivan said the Hawks had shortened from $4.25 to $3.40 this week for the NAB Cup following a series of big bets.

C[pounds sterling]We took some big bets at $4.25 and then another bet of $6000 came after we turned them off to $3.75 and punters are still backing them,C[yen] Sullivan said.

C[pounds sterling]They have been backed from $7.50 to $5.00 for the Flag so punters are predicting a big year for the Hawks.C[yen]

Sullivan said the only other team to come in for support had been West Coast who had shortened from $11 to $9.00.

Neither Queensland side is fancied in the NAB Cup with the Lions at $21 and the Suns at $51.

Strugglers backed to improve

THE two teams who battled it out for the wooden spoon last year, Gold Coast and Port Adelaide, have been well backed at Sportingbet Australia to improve on last year's win tally. …
