EVER seen a platypus in the wild?

Broken River, 95km west of Mackay, is one of the best places in Australia to spot the curious mammals in their natural environment.

With an elevation of more than 700m above sea level, it is also a great place to enjoy a cool change during our hot summer months.

Known as the Mackay Highlands, the area offers a huge range of things to see and do with platypus viewing on top of the list.

Robyn Burns and Marilyn Jefferson jointly run the Broken River kiosk and reckon the area is one of Mackay's best kept secrets.

She said the best time of day to see platypus in the wild was early and late.

A semi-nocturnal feeder, they can be seen from either tracks alongside Broken river or a viewing platform near the kiosk.

Other than spotting the semi-aquatic critters, visitors can see a wide range of other species including turtles and eels. …
