THE history of ship building on the River Tees is the subject of a new memories book and exhibition. The Heritage Gallery within the Cargo Fleet offices recently hosted a book launched by the Teesside Industrial Memories Project entitled Life at the Yard: Memories of Working at Smith's Dock.

And to support the book launch 12 large print photographs by Ambient Creative, which portray the history and workers at Smith's Dock are on show at the gallery until March 23.

Darlington-based graphic design consultants Ambient Creative was commissioned to design and produce the 120-page book for Teesside Industrial Memories Project, which was funded by Heritage Lottery.

The book features more than 98 archive photographs from around 1978 to 1980 taken by Ambient Creative and other contributors.

Smith's Dock in South Bank was a major shipyard and associated drydocks and repair facility from 1908.

More than 1,300 vessels were built at the dock between 1910 until it closed in 1987. …
