SPEED KILLS Aviation Family Loses Son; Police Consider Speed and Alcohol in Fatal Crash Investigation

SPEED and alcohol may have been factors in a horror crash that claimed the life of a young Hervey Bay man early yesterday.

Dayne Geltch was killed instantly when the turbocharged Ford Typhoon he was driving slammed into a fence and rolled several times at Boat Harbour Dr in Torquay.

Dayne, 23-year-old son of Fraser Island pilot Gerry Geltch and a pilot himself, was well-known on the Fraser Coast.

He was with two mates, aged 30 and 33, who were hurt in the crash.

The 30-year-old man was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital with head and neck injuries and underwent surgery yesterday.

The older man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The car, owned by one of the passengers, was believed to have been travelling at high speed when it failed to negotiate a corner at Barnstaple St about 1.40am.

The blue high-performance vehicle was so damaged from impact that it was almost unrecognisable.

It is understood two other passengers had chosen to get out of the car about 20 minutes before the crash. …
