First Planning Scheme Signed
THE Toowoomba Regional Planning Scheme has achieved the distinction of becoming the first to be approved by the Minister under the new legislation.
aBy becoming the first Queensland Planning Provisions compliant scheme under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 the Toowoomba Regional Council has achieved a major milestone in the State,a Mayor Peter Taylor said this week.
Cr Taylor recognised the efforts of councillors and staff following the news the Attorney-General, Minister for Local Government and Special Minister of State Paul Lucas signed off on the scheme.
aThis has been the biggest project undertaken by Toowoomba Regional Council in its first term,a Cr Taylor said.
aCouncil wishes to acknowledge input from members of the community, the local development industry and assistance from the State Government in achieving this milestone.a
The new planning scheme will replace the current eight planning schemes and will streamline planning and development for the future of the region.
The Regional Scheme stimulates opportunities for employment and local services, identifies future infrastructure needs, protects our region's natural assets and provides for a range of housing options across the region.
Attorney-General Paul Lucas said the scheme met the requirements of the Sustainable Planning Act (SPA) 2009 in providing the region with an all-inclusive planning horizon for the next 20 years.
aI congratulate the Toowoomba Regional Council on this monumental achievement,a Mr Lucas said.
aNot only is Toowoomba the first council in the state to adopt this forward-thinking planning scheme, but they are also bringing together eight different pre-amalgamation planning schemes into the one plan for the whole council.
aThis sets the benchmark for all other councils to aspire to in providing their community with direction and a greater sense for the bigger picture.
