Gillard, Swan Convinced Me to Scrap ETS: Rudd

KEVIN Rudd has publicly confirmed it was Julia Gillard and Wayne Swan that convinced him to shelve his emissions trading scheme, a decision that critically wounded his prime ministership.

As Mr Rudd finally committed to running against Ms Gillard in Monday's Labor leadership ballot, he spoke more candidly than ever before about events leading up to the June 2010 amidnight coupa that brought him down.

Mr Rudd had previously revealed some senior cabinet colleagues counselled him to drop the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme after it became clear he could not get it through the Parliament.

Yesterday he went further.

Asked if it was Ms Gillard and Mr Swan who convinced him to shelve it, he said: aYesa.

aThey took a view, very bluntly and very directly, that we should not proceed with the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme,a he told reporters in Brisbane.

aAnd furthermore in the case of Julia that we should adopt what she called a bipartisan solution. …
