VETERAN status has not dimmed either the work ethic or flow of creativity in the institution that is Fairport Convention.

The band celebrates its 45th year with a huge winter tour that brings them to The Sage Gateshead (Hall 2) on Sunday night.

Fairports have been featured here numerous times with copious references to the Richard Thompson/ Sandy Denny era of the late 60s.

However, Simon Nicol and Dave Pegg have been true stalwarts almost from formation to now, with each lacking only a handful of those 45 years' service.

The present line-up has remained stable since 1998 when Gerry Conway replaced the America-bound Dave Mattacks on drums.

Chris Leslie (fiddle, mandolin, vocals and songwriting) and Ric Sanders (fiddles and keys) complete the quintet.

The band has a massive backcatalogue - running to around 70 albums in all guises. Their latest album, Festival Bell, maintains the high standard.
