ades.Now, 15 years after Geri Halliwell burst on to the stage at The Brits wearing a Union Jack frock, the star has given it a makeover. The singer has teamed up with leading fashion brand Next to design a new collection of Union Jack pieces, which includes a re-worked version of that eye-catching frock.

The original garment, worn at the music awards in 1997, was fashioned together with a Union Jack tea towel. "I originally created it because I wanted to celebrate being British, and I went with my own gut instinct rather than listening to what anyone else said," the star tells me at the launch of the collection in London. "I got told not to wear it when I first made it. I think a stylist was worried that it looked National Front at the time and I said no, it's about celebrating Britain and British values. "Actually Britain is really inclusive of all cultures and we're probably one of the leading countries in equality and that's why I put a peace sign on the back.

For me the Union Jack dress kind of represents pride in our country, but also equality and also it's about being original and about being true to your own voice. "When I went out on stage wearing it, I felt proud." The range showcasing the Brit-ish flag comes as the UK gears up for the Olympics in London and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Geri herself is feeling particularly patriotic. "I think it's good to be really proud and respect where you arefrom," mum-of-one. "Our says the has given me so much I think we lead the in music, fashion. "It's quite easy to slate it, butI'm thinking what can I give to theworld rather than what it can giveme. For example the sequin UnionJack dress is more expensive, but my proceeds of that go to Youth Sports Trust, which generates dir -ection for young people into sport. It's really good."
