Roads a Poll Issue; RACQ Launches Safety Campaign Ahead of State Election to Target Rising Fatalities

QUEENSLAND'S peak motoring body has taken a campaign to save lives on the road to where it will have the most effect in the lead-up to the state election a to the voters.

The RACQ launched the unprecedented road safety campaign, using billboards and social media, on the Sunshine Coast yesterday.

Regional manager Judi Johnson said the RACQ, which represents 1.2 million motorists, was not political.

Ms Johnson said the RACQ wanted the major parties to commit to increased road funding before the March 24 election, and was focusing on making the Bruce Hwy safer.

It also pinpointed dangerous Sunshine Coast roads that needed funding. A Federal Government study released earlier this year found that one in six road deaths across Australia happened on the Bruce Hwy.

In 2011, 1292 people were killed on Australian roads. More than 200 of those died on the Bruce Hwy.

Ms Johnson said two Bruce Hwy billboards were launched on the Coast yesterday. …
