Netballers Use Teamwork to Paddle Their Way to Fitness

THE Whitsunday Sharks swapped netballs for paddles when they met the Sunset Bay Outrigger Club at Eimeo Beach to learn about a different type of team activity.

The netballers took turns paddling around the bay in an OC6 canoe after a small technique demonstration and paddling etiquette briefing.

Sunset Bay Outrigger Club president Marty Strecker said some of the women even braved personal fears and barriers to get in the canoe.

Back on the beach, there was a paddle rotation in the 13-metre outrigger canoe, which offered the netballers experience in the various seats.

C[pounds sterling]The day of paddling was brought about by the successful display the outriggers had at the Sports Expo, where the club also won the best dressed site at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre,C[yen] Strecker said.

The display drew a lot of interest from visitors, including the Whitsunday Sharks netball team.

In fact, the Sunset Bay Outrigging Club is offering other sporting codes a chance to experience a team sport different to their own, as a challenge and fresh outlook at working together. …
