THE following story is based on an e-mail I received recently, but it is so good that I want to share it.

I have reworded it slightly to make it more family-friendly:

aThere is a little country town where the mood is gloomy, the economy is weak, everyone is in debt and the townsfolk are depressed.

A tourist drives into town with the idea of staying for a night. The motel owner gives him the keys to all the available rooms so he can check them out, but insists that he leave a deposit of $100.

When he disappears upstairs the motel owner grabs the $100 and goes next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher then takes it up the street to pay his debt at the corner store. The store owner takes the $100 and pays his fuel bill. The service station owner takes the $100 to pay his bill he has racked up at the bookmakers. …
