Clubs Agree to Join Forces

NEWTOWN and Highfields believe both TRL clubs will benefit after yesterday agreeing to a one-year playing alliance.

Under the agreement which was mooted earlier this week, the two clubs will come together and play as Newtown/Highfields in the senior grades only.

The agreement, signed yesterday by Newtown president Tim Webber and Highfields counterpart Bob Pearce, says the club will play out of Newtown's home ground where they will wear Lions jerseys.

The Highfields strip will be worn in away games.

The players of both clubs will join to at least field teams in A grade, reserve grade and under-18s, with an option to field a C grade team.

All coaches from both clubs will be retained.

Highfields coach Tom Clevin will become coaching director of the joint venture while Newtown mentors Robert Woodbridge and Luke Hellyer will coach the A grade team.

And while both clubs are passionate about keeping their identity, the club presidents believe the agreement will benefit Newtown and Highfields. …
