Two Jacksonville-area school districts and several colleges are teaming up this weekend to help make students' college and professional dreams more attainable.

Florida State College at Jacksonville is hosting College Goal Sunday. Any student who attends the event can get assistance filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is necessary for a student to qualify for Pell grants and other federal assistance.

Additionally, students will have a chance to win thousands more in scholarships contributed by several Jacksonville-area institutions, including the University of North Florida and Jacksonville University as well as Edward Waters College and FSCJ.

Two separate events are being held Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. for students in Duval and Nassau counties. In Duval County, the event will be held at FSCJ's Advanced Technology Center at 401 W. State St. in downtown Jacksonville. The Nassau County event will be held at FSCJ's Nassau Center in Yulee at 76346 William Burgess Blvd.

Professional counselors and financial aid experts will be on hand at both locations to assist students with the application process.

"The people that are there are actual people that work in the financial aid departments at each school on a daily basis with students, so we know the issues they can have," said Angela Nickel, associate director of financial aid at FSCJ. …
