ANY new council led by mayoral aspirant Mark Jamieson would seriously consider scaling back the size of the $250 million, 4500-seat exhibition and convention centre approved last month.

Mr Jamieson said the region lacked much of the civic infrastructure that would define the Sunshine Coast as a city boasting the 10th largest population in Australia.

aAs mayor, I will concentrate council on the things that unite us rather than the things that divide us, as has been seen in the past,'' Mr Jamieson said.

aA profitable convention and exhibition centre capable of attracting major economic benefit and building community pride is a must.

aIt is already estimated we lose nearly $15 million a year due to our lack of such a facility. That's almost $300,000 a week that could be spent on the Sunshine Coast plus the spending we would attract from visitors further afield.''

However, Mr Jamieson made it clear that a serious review would be made of the size and criteria of the investment, saying ratepayers had expressed enough concern to warrant it. …
