HERE are my top five tips if you are flying domestically.

As I write, I am sitting snugly aboard my Virgin flight to Coolangatta, so I speak with some authority.

Leave earlier than you think you have to.

Once upon a time everyone aimed to check in at least an hour before their scheduled departure time.

These days the fact that airlines won't even let you board if you only arrive at the check-in counter (not the airport or queue) 29 minutes before your flight's scheduled departure means that passengers are only aiming to get there 30 minutes early a that's the cut-off time, people. Keep the stress to a minimum and be early.

Check in online if you don't like to wait around, but remember you still have to check in your luggage so if waiting around is not your thing then travel with hand luggage and check in online but be aware that some airlines will strictly enforce a maximum of 7kg. …
