AGREEING on standardised school zone times across the Gympie region is easier said than done, it seems.

New school speed zones throughout Queensland's regions must be standardised and in place by July 6, and the bulk of Gympie's 30 schools are likely to have new speed zones of 40kmh between 7.30-9.30am and 2-4pm, Monday to Friday, in line with the rest of south-east Queensland.

But the location of the Two Mile and Chatsworth State Schools on the Bruce Hwy puts them in a category of their own and, though more talks are to take place between those schools, Main Roads and Gympie Regional Council, they look likely to have reduced speed zones from 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm.

The times must be agreed on and a decision made by the end of this month. It was debated at the council meeting this week, where engineering director Bob Fredman described the state-wide standardising as problematic. …
