NEWCASTLE United winger Gabriel Obertan hopes he did enough to impress Alan Pardew in last night's Tyne-Wear reserve team derby at St James' Park.

The Frenchman found the net against Sunderland during a pulsating 3-3 draw which was played in exactly the right spirit in front of a crowd of nearly 3,000.

Obertan had not been seen since the 5-0 thrashing at Tottenham when he was taken off at half-time.

Obertan told the Chronicle: "It was good to be out there.

" I have not been playing in the last two first-team games, so I needed a bit of rhythm.

"I played an hour and it was a good game, with a good atmosphere as well.

"It was a good derby, even for a reserve game.

You have got to improve and impress people to make it back into the first team.

"Hopefully, I made a good impression."

"It was quite a big game for the reserves, especially with it being a derby. "As a first team player you always have to prove yourself whether it is a training game or a reserve game, so it was good to get a goal and claim a good result."

On an unfortunate night at Gallowgate, the derby clash also saw Dan Gosling sent off for two bookable offences and Remie Streete carried off after turning his ankle.

However, afterwards coach Willie Donachie said: "Remie's ankle is swollen but it is not broken."

United took the lead on 23 minutes when Obertan made no mistake.

Ryan Donaldson won the ball on the edge of the box and played it into the path of the fore Manchester United man, who picked his spot with a calm right-foot finish past Ben Wilson.

Sunderland were back in it when Alex Baird rushed out to make a routine clearance but, after a mix-up with James Perch, connected with nothing but fresh air on 28 minutes.

That left Oumare Tounkara with an easy task to roll into the empty net. …
