BANORA Point's Shannon Broadbent, 19, wants to be a Volunteer Eco Student Abroad.

All she needs is $1000.

Her fundraising, involving a raffle, sausage sizzle, speech at Banora Point High School, chocolate drive and doorknock will run until December.

aThrough this program I will be flying over to one of three countries a Fiji, Ecuador or South Africa,a she said.

aHere I will be participating in one week of volunteering, from January 19 to February 5, 2013.a

Within her chosen country South Africa she will work in orphanages teaching English, basic sanitation and nutrition through games and activities.

The Griffith University psychology student said volunteers would also renovate and revitalise run-down facilities with fresh paint, new play equipment, bathrooms and kitchens.

The volunteer work also includes helping build and install sustainable farming units.

Ms Broadbent is looking forward to going on safari, snorkelling or learning to surf in the Indian Ocean, having her bones read by a witch doctor, visiting Swaziland University, white-water rafting and horse and quad bike riding. …
