Stephen Brenkley in Colombo Cricket brought to you in association with FOR one of England's treasure trove of fast bowlers it was an impeccable start to the tour of Sri Lanka today. For another it brought only pain and worry.

Jimmy Anderson took the first four wickets to fall on the opening day of the match against a Sri Lanka Board XI, achieving a potent combination of late movement and lethal accuracy, which allowed the tourists to dominate proceedings.

But his expected partner, Stuart Broad, was forced to withdraw from the team with a sprained ankle after stepping on a boundary rope during fielding practice. Steve Finn was called in, which was hardly a diminution of England's quality.

Although Broad was not so damaged that he needed a scan, it was still untimely. There is only one more practice match before the First Test.

So strong are England's resources at present that they barely noticed his absence. …
