Flu Prevents American Flying in; Doomben Bout Forced to Be Postponed

THE Alex Leapai-Kevin Johnson showdown set for tomorrow at Doomben has been postponed for two weeks.

American Johnson (25-1-1, 11 KOs), who in his only defeat, went the 12-round journey for the WBC crown against Vitale Klitschko in 2009, suffered the flu and was not able to fly out. Big punching Leapai is 25-3-3 with 20 KOs.

IN his first outing since being upset in the first round by world No.325 Kashif Mumtaz in May, the Gold Coast's Les Sherrington (28-6, 17 KOs) returned with a points win over Argentina's No 7 Oscar Daniel Veliz (29-18-2, 5 KOs) in Townsville on Friday.

Townsville-born Sherrington, who was rated No.3 by the IBF prior to the Mumtaz loss, is now world No.29 super middleweight (76.20 kg/12 stone) by boxrec.com.

THE Mexico a Puerto Rico rivalry gave us another gem last Sunday. In San Juan, PR, Mexico's Orlando Salido (38-11-2, 26 KOs) retained his WBO feather(57.15kg/9stone) title with a 10-round stoppage of local hero Juan Manuel Lopez (31-2, 28 KOs).

While it may not be one for the ages, the fight is a sure candidate for fight of the year with several fierce exchanges.

Salido, who took the title with an upset eight-round knockout of aJuanmaa last April, won the first four rounds before a southpaw right hook knocked him down late in the fifth in a round he otherwise dominated. In a fast-paced contest both fighters had their moments but it was Salido who was landing the cleaner and more consistently.

Rounds eight and nine were real special. Lopez had Salido backing up but the champion kept throwing a and landing a power shots. A six-punch salvo triggered by a short right hook and uppercut at the start of round 10 dropped Lopez heavily.

He beat the count but was rubbery and the referee stopped it just 30 seconds into round 10. …
