AFTER seven decades of constant wear, Colleen Nairn's wedding ring has worn so thin that it has had to be rebuilt by jewellers.

But her bond with husband Bill has remained as strong as ever, as the pair celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary with a lunch at the Carriers Arms yesterday.

The couple married in New Zealand on March 16, 1940, when Colleen was 19 and Bill was 23.

They had already been an item for four years, after meeting at the restaurant where they both worked.

aAs soon as I first saw her, it just sort of clicked,a Bill said about his wife.

aI knew that she was the one.a

As Colleen was just a teenager, her mother said she could not marry until she was 21.

But nothing got in the way of true love, and Bill managed to get Colleen's father's permission to wed when she was 19.

The couple had three children, five grand-children and is up to 12 great-grandchildren.

Colleen, now 91 years old, said their marriage had thrived because they enjoyed spending time together a which was particularly necessary when they went into business together, running a butchery. …
