FOR decades Australians have been closing the day with an ice-cold beer at the pub and starting the next with a warm cuppa, but is coffee taking over?

A recent Roy Morgan study has revealed a 5% drop in pub visits in Australia since 2003, and with numerous new cafes opening in Rockhampton in the last year, Sexie Coffie manager Tina Reiser said it was no surprise that cafe culture popularity was rising rapidly.

aThere's a lot of demand for coffee shops in Rockhampton at the moment,a she said.

For coffee drinker Kelly Gallagher, the choice between pub and cafe was all about the atmosphere.

aI can come to a cafe with my friends and have girly talk,a Kelly said.

Capricorn Enterprise chairman Grant Cassidy said the growth in cafe culture in Rockhampton was a testimony to the city's acoming of agea. …
