MARK STOROR: A TENDER SUBJECT Secret venue A TENDER Subject is the result of three years' work by artist Mark Storor. Commissioned by Artangel, it's an exploration of the lives of gay prison inmates. These are generally ignored or repressed; gay prisoners feel they must deny their sexuality, and Storor at first struggled to find any.

The project, developed through a programme of workshops, is an ambitious hybrid of installation and drama. The audience convenes in Moorgate and is taken by minibus to the performance's location. Its identity has to be kept secret but the setting is atmospheric -- huge, sinister and steeped in history.

What follows is an episodic promenade piece depicting some of the unexpected moments of intimacy that occur among prisoners and staff. Uniformed officers lead us from room to room. Their presence is stern without being coercive. When we are told to leave a section of the performance just as it's beginning to get interesting, it's a reminder of real prisoners' curtailed freedoms and the strict policing of space and time. …
