MORE than half of Gladstone's big businesses run industrial tours that are open to the public.

Large mining companies such as QER, Boyne Smelters Limited and Queensland Alumina Limited and the Gladstone Ports Corporation offer free public tours on a weekly basis.

As part of the Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Limited's Industry Tour initiative, the four major industries in the city aim to provide visitors and locals with a free weekly tour of their operations. Last year energy and resources company QER opened the New Fuels Development Centre, which is accessible seven days a week.

aVisitors to the centre are able to access a range of information on our demonstration plant project, including detailed animations of our processes,a QER spokesman John Hewitt said.

Gladstone's other energy giant Orica does not run tours for the public at the Yarwun site due to safety concerns, but it is hoping to imitate site tours run at their Kooragang Island, NSW, site. …
