New Flood Damage All Part of the Challenge; Council Commended on Progress

MAJOR General Richard Wilson was delighted with Gympie's flood recovery progress yesterday, despite setbacks caused by fresh damage from floods this month.

Maj-Gen Wilson, who replaced Mick Slater as Queensland Reconstruction Authority chairman, travelled to Amamoor yesterday to inspect some of the repairs organised by his predecessor last year and some of the ones he will have to manage now.

The scene was the Amamoor Bridge, barely open yesterday after flood waters and tree trunk flotsam smashed its heavy timber footpath, causing still unassessed damage to the decking and supporting structure.

aWe've just been up to the new section of Amamoor Creek Rd,a he said, adding that he was pleased to see the council-built repairs had stood up so well to this year's challenges.

The road slumped spectacularly during the 2010-2011 floods, with cliff-like drops of a metre or more and severe threatening landslip cracks where its foundations had virtually fallen into the creek. …
