THE new season got off to a cracking start on Northumbrian Water fisheries with good numbers of quality fish and limit bags recorded.

Fly-only Hury led the way with 42 anglers recording eight-fish limits and, at Grassholme, James Bartlett from Witton Gilbert had a day to remember, landing a fine eight-fish limit, including a tagged fish worth pounds 200, for 30lb 8oz.

On opening day at Kielder Water, Mark Liversidge caught his eight-fish limit at Tower Knowe by 10.30am. Brendan Smith also had a quick limit bag, including a fish of 4lb 2oz.

Fly angler John Bower fished Tower Knowe, taking eight for18lb 7oz; Martin Kenny, also fly fishing at Stocky Bay, landed a limit catch; and the best fish of the week at 4lb 5oz was taken by Ian Payne, who had limit catch from Hawkhope.

Tower Knowe Visitor Centre will be open for permit, tackle and bait sales from April 1. The season at Fontburn also got off to a good start with good numbers of 6lb-plus fish taken on baits and spinners this week. S Langley had an 8lb 8oz rainbow from the north shore; Barry Wilson, also fishing the north shore, took fish ranging from 3lb to 7lb for a total catch weight of 29lb 8oz; and Craig Clements from North Shields had a superb day spinning from the dam wall to land a good bag, including fish of 5lb and 6lb 8oz.

Also on the north shore, Brian Kelly recorded a fine four-fish catch, including the heaviest fish this week at 11lb.

D Macdonald fished the South Shore Bay to take an eight-fish limit, including three fish of more than 4lb, for 23lb 4oz, and Sid Barnes had an eight-fish limit that included three at 4lb, for 22lb.

Fishing an afternoon credit cruncher permit on Sunday, four-year-old Kyle Whellans from Widdrington and his dad, Anthony, had a great afternoon, each catching two fine conditioned blue trout. …
