Backpackers Rescued from Roof of Bus

A GROUP of backpackers was forced to clamber to the roof of a bus early yesterday before they were dramatically rescued from rising floodwater just east of Miriam Vale.

Townsville traveller Krystil Davis, who was among 14 backpackers travelling on the bus, said the group was headed from Agnes Water to Miriam Vale along Fingerboard Rd when their way was blocked by water over the road.

She said the bus went around a corner and the driver stopped when he saw water across the road.

He tried to reverse, but then found there was water behind them.

C[pounds sterling]We waited for it to pass, but it just got deeper and deeper,C[yen] she said.

C[pounds sterling]We had to get all the luggage out from under the bus, but the water kept rising and we knew we needed help.C[yen]

Even though it was about 3am, passengers started using their mobile phones to try calling for help.
