Insurance Bill Yet to Be Tallied

THE damage bill from Thursday's flood crisis is growing by the hour as staff from major insurance companies work through the weekend assessing hundreds of claims.

By yesterday afternoon, RACQ and Suncorp had received close to 200 household and vehicle claims but were expecting that number to increase significantly.

The cost of repairing vehicles trapped in the rapidly-rising floodwaters is expected to run into hundreds of thousands of dollars, with a fleet of tow-trucks yesterday ferrying an endless parade of sodden vehicles to holding yards.

Mike Clayton, owner of Claytons Towing, said it was the busiest day he'd seen in 40 years.

Most of the damaged cars were being towed from along the Nicklin Way, where they had been abandoned by their owners when the flooding peaked, but others were being collected from Maroochydore's Sixth Ave and the Alexandra Headland stretch.

But his teams were also busy dragging vehicles from the flooded underground car parks of resorts and unit complexes. …
