Man Is Held after Bikes Are Stolen from School

A MAN has been arrested in connection with the theft of bikes from a school for children with autism on Tyneside. The incident happened between Wednesday and Thursday at Thomas Bewick School at Linhope Road in West Denton, Newcastle.

Three sheds in the school grounds were broken into and 12 bikes were stolen. It is believed that the thieves even made a makeshift ramp to get the bikes over the school's railings.

One of the stolen bikes is a distinctive red bike with four wheels that is worth more than pounds 1,000.

Yesterday morning a Community Support Officer on patrol spotted the stolen bike being used by a man at Mortimer Avenue in Newbiggin Hall.

The 21-year-old has been arrested and is helping with enquiries, and the bike has been recovered.

Neighbourhood Inspector Julie Rana said: "A CSO on patrol spotted the bike and immediately took action to ensure it was recovered and the man arrested. Enquiries are ongoing.

"We're still appealing for witnesses to this burglary to get in touch with us and I'd urge anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area around the school overnight on Wednesday into Thursday, to contact us. …
