TIM Mulherin is clinging to the seat of Mackay by his fingernails this morning as counting continues in the wake of Saturday night's LNP landslide victory.

For 97 years Mackay had been one of Labor's safest state seats.

Now it is the most marginal.

As a stunned Mr Mulherin, his wife Erin, family and supporters watched Saturday night's election results roll in at his Mackay home, his mobile phone rang.

C[pounds sterling]It's the Premier's office,C[yen] he said as he walked off into the dark to speak with Ms Bligh.

Mr Mulherin cast a sombre and forlorn figure as he leant against a gate and, under the dim glow of a street light, shared the pain with the once mighty Premier.

After that call, and before the next from another fallen colleague, he said there had been only three C[pounds sterling]seismic changesC[yen] in Queensland political history. …
