HOWZAT! Umpiring Not Good Enough for Second Grade Easts Skipper

EASTS' second grade captain Chris Fisher has had enough. Enough to contemplate retiring from the game and taking up umpiring.

According to Fisher, several dubious umpire decisions in the weekend's second grade elimination final between Easts and Tucabia-Copmanhurst marred what should have been a good game of cricket.

Easts ended up losing the match by just eight runs but, for Fisher, the way in which the umpires conducted themselves was more of a concern.

C[pounds sterling]It's definitely not sour grapes, but I think I owe it to my teammates and club to explain what actually went on,C[yen] Fisher said.

C[pounds sterling]Everyone at the ground felt the same way including their (Tucabia) captain who felt a bit sorry for us with some of the decisions.

C[pounds sterling]Basically, I counted us to have over 15 genuine shouts at LBW including one on middle stump to Steve Whitton which was a toe-crusher right in front.

C[pounds sterling]We had nothing go our way.C[yen]

The Easts skipper said he talked to his players during the change of innings to keep them positive but said the umpires continued to make bad decisions.

C[pounds sterling]We were a bit down-hearted so I told the team as long as it goes both ways we'll be fine,C[yen] he said.

C[pounds sterling]And sure enough it didn't. When we batted they had seven genuine appeals and got five of them.

C[pounds sterling]The alarm bells then started ringing. The umpires were assuming a lot and were not in touch with the rules.C[yen]

Fisher went on to question why two first grade umpires were in charge of a second grade final, citing their alleged lack of interest as a major problem.

C[pounds sterling]So are we paying people just because we need umpires and don't care what standard we get? …
