Hilux Torched for Revenge; Blaze Spread to Two Other Vehicles

REVENGE had driven a jealous and drunk Jake Michael John Rutledge to torch the car of his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.

The fire spread to two other vehicles parked nearby leaving a damage bill of almost $30,000, Toowoomba District Court heard.

Rutledge, 18, later told police he had drunk 16 vodka Red Bulls before going to a mechanical repair yard in Goondiwindi where he knew the complainant's car was held on the night of February 6 last year.

After pouring a 20 litre can of diesel over the Toyota Hilux utility, the teen lit the blaze which destroyed that vehicle and spread to a Nissan Patrol 4WD and a Mitsubishi sedan nearby.

Crown prosecutor Kathleen Millican said the Toyota Hilux was not insured, while the 4WD belonged to a family holidaying in Queensland at the time and seasonal workers owned the Mitsubishi sedan.

As a result, the first complainant had to take out a $9500 loan, while the holidaying family was left without a vehicle, though insurance had covered the loss. …
