Nifco Plays Its Part in Region's Success

SMALL parts form the basis of what is a genuinely big business in Teesside.

Nifco, a plastic injection moulding company, produces intricate components that fit neatly into the engines of cars right around the world. The Eaglescliffe manufacturer, which last year turned over more than pounds 32m, is proof that the sum is quite often greater than the parts - and for Nifco, this is reflected not only in the products it makes, but in the way the company develops its workforce. Nifco's team, from the management to the factory floor, all play a role in shaping a business that is playing its part in putting North-east manufacturing on a worldwide stage. At the helm of Nifco UK is Mike Matthews, with 28 years' experience at Nifco, who has risen through the ranks to his current role as managing director of the Teesside operation.

"I've always believed that any business is only as good as its team," says Mr Matthews.

"In a similar way to the parts we produce, every member of our workforce is important - none more than another - and each has played, and continues to play, a role in making the business the growing force it is today."

Mr Matthews became MD of the business four years ago, having started out his career as an apprentice tool maker. The Stockton businessman learnt his trade with Newton Aycliffe-based specialist training and development company South West Durham Training (SWDT), a provider he is now working with to train a number of apprentices who have joined the company.

"Investing in the next generation of engineers and manufacturers is absolutely vital. The training I received at SWDT was a great basis on which to develop a career, and many of the managers at the company are former apprentices who have progressed to their current roles. We're committed to working with apprentices, and giving people a helping hand to start out their career in manufacturing. …
