Man Set Fire to House to Deny Bank

A MAN who had failed to pay his mortgage tried to set his Pomona home on fire before the bank reclaimed it.

Brian Robert Adams, 51, was told in the morning that he had to leave his home. By the afternoon he had doused a cupboard in fuel and set it alight. Ten photographs of the charred furniture were passed to the judge in Maroochydore District Court yesterday.

The bank had to pay for Adams' house on Peacock St to be guarded around the clock for three months until it sold, fearing he would try to burn it down again.

The court heard Adams, who suffered from mental health issues, had an element of spite when he decided to set fire to the home where he had previously lived with his wife and children.

He pleaded guilty to the attempted arson on June 29, 2009.

Defence barrister Steve Courtney said that Adams had no memory of lighting the fire because he had been drunk and misusing prescription drugs.

Mr Courtney said the house sold about three months after the fire for less than it had been valued. …
