THE old saying that if there's is a drought on land then there's surely a drought at sea is well known and it's so pleasing to witness the complete opposite to that recently.

The reef fishing has been on fire and it is a snowballed result of all the rainfall occurring in all the river systems at the moment.

It's hard to believe that what is happening on land and in the rivers could stretch nature's hand as far as to 30 miles out to sea, thus creating a feeding frenzy of healthy reef species such as red emperor, sweetlip, pearl perch, trout and cod.

The freshwater produced by natural rainfall has valuable nutrients which prawns, bait fish and smaller fish species need to become active and healthy providing an excellent food source to create the beginning of a food chain which ends miles out to sea.

So if you are a bit disheartened at only catching catfish or eels in the river think of the big picture and that in the months to come the fishing is going to be the best we have seen in years. …
