ONE OF Australia's most thought-provoking commentators landed in Gladstone last week.

Dr Keith Suter made a presentation at the GAPDL Gladstone Regional Economic Development Conference.

He was there to discuss carbon pricing. However, he raised many other topics, such as:

The Hawke/Keating revolution:

C[pounds sterling]In 1983 the Hawke/Keating Government got elected and they overturned a policy which had been in place for 80 years. (A policy of) protecting the Australian economy.

C[pounds sterling]We then moved over to what is called the Cyfree market economy'. And that has now followed on through the Australian economy and transformed our lives.

C[pounds sterling]And when the Howard Government came to power, it couldn't reverse it.

C[pounds sterling]Back in the 1980s, we stepped out in faith that we were making the right decision. There were some winners and some losers.

C[pounds sterling]And that, in a sense, is what I think we are going to see in this new era (of carbon pricing).

C[pounds sterling]There are going to winners, and there are going to be losers. But no one knows for sure who will be those winners and losers.

C[pounds sterling]Just like 30 years ago, we are on another journey to an unknown destination. …
