TWO British sailors have been rescued from their stricken yacht off the coast of California after being injured in "monstrous" storms.

Jane Hitchens, 50, from Kent, and Nik Brbora, 29, from London, were hurt on Saturday when a huge wave struck Geraldton Western Australia during the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race. The boat's steering wheel and mount and some of its communications equipment were swept away.

Skipper Juan Coetzer today described the scene, 400 nautical miles west of the San Francisco coast. "The sea was alive with rage," he said. "We were making good speed, then a monstrous foaming swell broke over our stern.

"The water had so much force in it that it pushed (a crew member) into the helm, snapping the pedestal clean off. We had no steering and crew were falling all over the boat."

Dr Hitchens, the onboard medic, suffered four suspected broken ribs. Mr Brbora, a software engineer, has a suspected pelvic strain. …
