Bus Industry Calls for Taskforce to Save Kids

THE Queensland Bus Industry Council has urged the community to find a solution to children being left at bus stops to prevent a repeat of the Daniel Morcombe tragedy.

The council's executive director, David Tape, used a national conference on the Gold Coast yesterday to call on new state Transport Minister Scott Emerson to establish a taskforce to look into the problem.

Mr Tape acknowledged that the problem of children being left behind at bus stops had become a public issue since Daniel Morcombe disappeared at Woombye in 2003.

A full bus had left Daniel waiting for another bus travelling a few minutes behind but he disappeared before it arrived.

aBecause of Mr and Mrs Morcombe, and their passion and commitment to try to prevent it happening again, I think it's now a discussion topic, whereas before, it didn't even get on the agenda,'' Mr Tape said.

He said the bus industry took the issue of children being left behind at bus stops seriously, but there was only so much a bus driver could do. …
