JAMES TAVERNIER is on stand-by for tomorrow's Premier League battle with Swansea City.

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew had no choice but to recall him from his loan stint with MK Dons after James Perch picked up a knock in training.

And it means that Tavernier is on the brink of making his first Toon appearance since last term's Carling Cup trip to Accrington Stanley.

The recall of Tavernier underlines United's problems in the heart of defence. But Pardew has faith in the 20-year-old player. He told the Chronicle: "We've called back Tav so he will go straight into the squad.

"The experience he's going to gain in these last seven games will be significant in his development." Tavernier has just two competitive first-team appearances under his belt.

Yet the player was heavily involved in firstteam duty during preseason and performed well during the Magpies' tour of the United States.

Tavernier has spent this season on loan at Carlisle United, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons. …
