BEATEN Redcar Bears get an instant opportunity for revenge against Sheffield Tigers tonight.

The Practical Car and Van Rental Bears were beaten 49-40 in South Yorkshire last night but will fancy their chances of reversing that - and some - in the return Premier League Cup clash at South Tees Motorsports Park this evening (7.30pm start).

Though it's true they didn't help themselves at times, the scoreline flattered the hosts and Brian Havelock could rightly point to a double dose of appalling luck in heat 11 which cost them a point.

Skipper Aaron Summers, who has picked up points for fun both at PL and Elite League level this term, had a stinker, retiring with bike problems in his opening ride and scoring only three points after that.

Fellow heat leaders Matej Kus and - to a certain extent - Ulrich Ostergaard - blew hot and cold, though when they were hot they were scorching.

But encouragingly the middle and lower orders produce points to keep the visitors well in with a shout until the last few races.

Justin Sedgmen enjoyed arguably his best meeting as a Bear while debutant Mark Jones roared to a pair of fine second places in his first meeting for six months - and already he looks a good bet to contribute well in the space left by Robert Branford's departure.

The Bears certainly seem to have a team with the appetite for a scrap this year and scored points both from the gate and the back on the fast Owlerton oval They led 16-14 after five heats and, after briefly slipping behind, quickly brought the scores back level.

The outside of the track is the place to be at Sheffield and Carl Wilkinson produced a spectacular swoop round the boards to pass Hugh Skidmore and Klaus Jakobsen in heat eight.

And Jones made a carbon copy move to roar down the back straight ahead of Richard Hall in the very next race. …
