Alice Brings a Bit of Animal Magic to Class

FARMING life has been brought into the classroom for one teenager in the North East.

Alice Carmichael, 14, is a pupil at Newcastle's Church High School who lives on her family farm in Ponteland, Northumberland.

The Year 9 pupil has a special role on the farm at lambing time, looking after lambs that have been abandoned by their mothers.

Acting as their carer, Alice bottle-feeds the baby lambs, gradually building them up to the point that they can be put out to grass and look after themselves.

On a daily basis, before setting off for school, Alice ensures all her animals, including pigs and hens as well, are fed and cared for.

She said: "I love caring for the baby lambs and making sure they find their feet in the early stages of their lives.

"It's a hard job and a big responsibility, but it is incredibly rewarding."

Teachers at Church High school have encouraged Alice to share her experiences on the farm with her classmates with classroom presentations and projects. …
