Family Slept as Burglars Broke in; Pair Jailed for Stealing Gifts from under Tree

A FAMILY'S Christmas was hit by raiders who plundered presents from under the tree, a court has heard.

Helen Taylor had left the gifts - including a pounds 400 iPad - wrapped and ready for the big day. But serial crooks Robert Gales and Edward Short broke in through a dining room window in the dead of night at her North Shields home.

They snatched the presents, together with a handbag, before making off in the family's VW Golf from the driveway, Newcastle Crown Court heard. And with less than a week to go before Christmas Day, the raid left Mrs Taylor, of Camp Terrace, facing a race to save the celebrations.

Paul Rowland, prosecuting, said: "She describes the inconvenience and upset caused to her and her family.

"They had retired to bed at around midnight and at 5am the following morning were alerted that the burglary had taken place."

Gales, 35, of Railway Terrace, and Short, 39, of Rudyerd Street, both North Shields, admitted burglary on December 19 last year. …
