IT only took minutes for a Maroochydore couple's relaxing Thailand holiday to turn into a frightening case of deja vu.

Jan Bathersby and her husband Damian (pictured) were enjoying a swim in their resort pool at Patong when a panicked waiter approached them with the news of an 8.6 magnitude earthquake.

The tsunami siren sounded as the waiter finished his stumbled sentence, aThere was a big earthquake and now there is a 90% chance of a tsunami coming and it could be six metres.a

A mass panic erupted as tourists and staff scrambled to the resort's top floor where luckily the Bathersby hotel room was situated.

aWe went to our room and people were starting to panic and lots of people were coming up the stairs and the lifts to the top level,a Mrs Bathersby said.

aThere is a huge hotel being built across from us and all the workers climbed to the top of the half finished building.
