AT last the first salmon has been caught on the River Coquet.

The lucky angler was Warkworth rod Steve Hawthorn.

He landed the fresh run 7lb spring salmon on the Morwick beat on a fly 'The Tosh'.

This sought-after fish wins Steve the Coquet Trophy and a year's free membership for the Northumbrian Anglers Federation. It has been a long wait for the Coquet's first fish, but with dwindling stocks of spring salmon it has now become the norm.

Tyne continues to give sport and the good spate that came through the whole Tyne catchment on Tuesday should augur well for the immediate future as far as salmon sport is concerned. The rise in water will get fish through into the North Tyne where beats such as Chesters and Haughton Castle should score.

Anglers fishing local stillwaters and reservoirs have had a weekend to remember.

Almost all the fisheries produced great sport.

What a week at Higham Lakes with no fewer than 32 double figure trout coming to the net; as well as countless others between 5lb and 10lb. …
