TWEED'S Paul Girdler says a galaxy of stars is the only way to describe the men's and women's field for the Golden Nugget.

Defending champion and four-time winner Kelvin Kerkow, along with Jo Edwards, winner in 2009 and 2011, top the list of stars receiving invitations to play in the most prestigious singles tournament in Australasia.

aThis is no doubt one of the best fields ever invited to play in the Nugget, now in its 26th year, and it has been my toughest assignment so far as bowls manager to select 11 men and ladies to play in the 2012 tournament,a Girdler said.

Four previous winners are included in the men's field a Kerkow (1994, 1997, 2008, 2011), Steve Glasson (1995, 2007, 2009), Nathan Rice (2006) and Brett Wilkie (2010).

Carmen Anderson has won twice, in 2008 and 2010, both times defeating Murphy in the final. National captain Lynsey Armitage won her only Golden Nugget title in 2006 and as the current Australian Open winner will be a favourite to add to her success this year.

Leif Selby, runner-up to Kerkow last year, has come out of retirement just in time to receive an invitation and beaten semi-finalists, young guns, Sean Baker and Ben Twist, are sure to go well again.

Mark Casey will be looking for his first Golden Nugget and maybe this will be his year.

Rebecca Quail, runner-up last year, is in great form, having won the Tasmanian state title again and Champion of Champions, and will be a major challenger, especially on the swift Tweed Heads greens.

The 2010 Australian Open and Junior Golden Nugget winner, Lisa Phillips, did well in her first Nugget last year, making the semi-final but was unable to topple the world champion Edwards. …
