DURHAM AND WEARSIDE Winner: Tekmar Energy, Newton Aycliffe Tekmar Energy is making a name for itself as a developer of sophisticated protection systems for offshore subsea power cables, and is on track to reach turnover of around pounds 12.5m this year.

It has only been running for five years, but works with many of the biggest renewable energy companies in the world.

Staff numbers rose from 10 in 2009 to 65 last year, and it is currently targeting expansion in China and the USA.

Runners up Lanchester Wine Group, Annfield Plain: Lanchester Wine Group imports and trades wines and spirits, and has been running for over 30 years. The County Durham firm expects to reach turnover of pounds 36m in 2012, up pounds 10 from the previous year. Success has been largely sparked by growth in the wine bottling business.

NTE Limited, Peterlee: Management and staff have turned around the fortunes of the communications business, turning a pounds 100,000 loss in 2008 into a profitable business. NTE provides services such as temporary site communications and specialist conference systems, and is increasingly moving into new export markets.

TEESSIDE Winner: NIFCO UK, Stockton The 2010 overall winner picked up another trophy in early March this year, winning its Teesside heat for the second year in a row. The Japanese-owned plastic injection moulding company creates components which are used in the engines of cars around the world, and turned over more than pounds 32m last year. It has just opened a new pounds 8.5m factory in Eaglescliffe, which will help it to provide an even better service to clients such as Nissan, Ford, Toyota and Honda.

Runners up Darchem Engineering, Stockton: Darchem's highly-engineered insulation components, fire protection systems and complex fabrications are used in sectors such as aerospace, nuclear, oil and gas and nuclear. …
